A Colorful Reminder
My Cardinal Transformation
In 2014, my husband passed away after heroically fighting 6 bouts of cancer for 18 years. He lost that battle to pancreatic cancer, but only after nearly an 8-year fight! He turned his life over to a power holier than mere man, and his faith never wavered. For the past 5 years, I have struggled with letting him go, and finally this year, on the 5th anniversary of his death, I made a drastic move to remove my wedding band--the last gift he gave me before he died. Until two days ago, I have harbored guilty feelings about that change. Then, my daughter told me of the Cardinal Experience, intersecting the cardinal bird, the cardinal directions, and the cardinal cross. I was skeptical. However, that afternoon, a bright, red cardinal plopped itself on the fence in my yard. As I looked out of the window stunned, he turned around to face me. I felt such stillness and comfort from that small gesture. It began to sing. I felt a transformation come over me, and knew at that moment and since then, that my decision was received with approval from my husband who would want me to move on with my life and not continue to agonize and mourn over him. He was a happy person, full of life, and he LOVED the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team. I had simply forgotten how happy he made me, and realized how blessed I am to have known him and had him in my life for so long. I don't know if my cardinal bird will ever return. But it was a bright, colorful reminder that has transformed my thinking and doing. I am SO grateful!
